Teach kids the joy of giving

Teach kids the joy of giving. A boy gives a present, and a girl cheers by the Christmas tree

Wish lists, presents and expectations. For kids, Christmas is often about what they’re going to get. But the joy of giving is just as big, once they discover it.

Let your child make the gift

A drawing, a decorated jar, a little bead necklace. When your child makes the gift themselves, they feel proud, and they can’t wait to see the other person’s face.

Let your child choose

Bring your child along when you shop for a gift for someone else. “What do you think Grandpa would like?” It helps your child practice thinking of others.

Watch the person opening it

When the gift is opened, say: “Look how happy she is.” That’s the moment that teaches your child the joy of giving.

Give time and kindness

A gift doesn’t have to be a thing. A hug, help with the dishes or a song for Grandma are gifts too.

Pass it on

Sort through toys together, and find something that can be given to other children. Talk about who might be happy to get it.

A story about giving

Books where your child helps Santa or shares their Christmas with others paint a picture of giving as one of the very best things about Christmas.
