New Year’s is a great time to look back and look ahead. For children, New Year’s resolutions don’t have to be about getting better. They can be about trying something new or doing something kind.

Look back first

What was the best thing this year? What did you learn? When were you brave? It gives your child a sense of how much they’ve grown.

Small, concrete resolutions

  • I want to learn to ride a bike without training wheels.
  • I want to help set the table.
  • I want to try a new dish.
  • I want to say something kind to my sister.
  • I want to read a book every night.

Put it positively

“I want to be good at sharing” is better than “I won’t take toys from others.” It focuses on what your child wants to do instead of what they’re not allowed to do.

Write it down

Let your child draw their resolution, and hang it up. Talk about it again after a month. How is it going?

Grown-ups join in

Share your own resolution. It shows your child that everyone can learn something new, grown-ups too.
