Winter activities for kids – outdoors and indoors

Winter is dark and cold, but it has its own magic too. Here are ideas for making the most of it.
Outdoors
- Build a snowman or a snow fort.
- Make snow angels.
- Look for animal tracks in the snow, and guess who walked there.
- Make a bird feeder from suet and seeds, and hang it up.
- Freeze water with leaves and berries in a mold, and hang the ice ornament in a tree.
- Take a lantern walk in the dark.
- Go sledding on the nearest hill.
Indoors
- Build a blanket fort, and read with a flashlight.
- Bake whole-grain rolls together.
- Make paper snowflakes.
- Play a memory game or a board game.
- Draw winter animals: squirrels, hedgehogs, deer and birds.
- Have an indoor picnic on a blanket.
- Make an ice rink out of aluminum foil for toy animals.
- Read winter stories under the covers.
Talk about winter animals
Where does the hedgehog go in winter? What do the birds eat? Winter is a great chance to learn about nature and how animals cope with the cold.
